Day One Lesson – Introduction to the Elements of Poetry

This lesson will introduce the students to the different elements of poetry through a live web conferencing session.

Pre-Assessment
The students will take a pre-assessment on the elements of poetry in order for the teacher to recognize the areas that will need to be focused on during the unit.

Warm-Up:
The teacher will start the lesson off by reading a poem that contains the different elements of poetry. The teacher will ask the students what they liked about the poem, what made it interesting and fun, and what elements stood out that directly relate to poetry.

Activities:
The teacher will briefly present each element of poetry using a PowerPoint. The PowerPoint will include many different poems written by famous poets. As the teacher introduces the different elements, the students will be asked to locate those elements within the poems, as well as take notes on the different elements of poetry. The students will participate in the course by responding via chat, or using their microphones.

The students will respond to the following question on the class Wiki page. What was your favorite poem that was shared today? What elements of poetry made it interesting for you to read?
